Depression Counseling

Are you wondering if you might be experiencing depression?
  • Have you lost your energy and motivation for your daily life?
  • Do you find yourself creating distance from the people in your life?
  • Do you feel emotionally numb or checked out?
  • Are the people closest to you expressing concern about you?
  • Are you experiencing sleep disturbances or very different sleep patterns?
  • Are you often tearful and struggle to find hope?
These are just some common experiences when a person is experiencing depression. It may be difficult to accept that you may be dealing with depression. Sometimes a depression may follow a big life event, significant loss or difficult change. In these cases, it isn't as surprising to be emotionally affected by what happened. Sometimes, depression may sneak up and silently grow until it becomes a large life disturbance. These cases are more difficult to understand, but still fairly common. You may even find yourself thinking, "If I could just think positively, I can pull myself out of this." You may even have people in your life telling you to think positively so you can get back on track.

One of the most striking things we have noticed in supporting people with depression: they are already giving it their all. In fact, it takes super-human strength to get out of bed, get dressed and move into your day when you are depressed. This effort isn't often understood or appreciated by loved ones most of the time. We know how difficult and heavy life feels when you are navigating depression. Depression can affect your relationships, your energy levels, your motivation, your professional life and your hope for something better.

Depression is one of the most difficult experiences anyone might ever face, and it is something we all may experience at some time in life. Emotional slumps happen to all of us, and sometimes they become more significant and lasting. In fact, depression is the number 1 cause of disability in the US for people ages 15-44. The economic impact of depression is significant. Depression is in the top 3 major causes of workplace disruption. The problem is that 2/3 of people experiencing depression DO NOT seek treatment. However, when people DO seek treatment for depression 80% see improvements within 4-6 weeks. (Source)

We have seen the positive impact of depression counseling in our practice!
Our approach to depression counseling is gentle, compassionate, trauma-informed culturally-humble and nervous-system focused. When you start working with a therapist, we will help create an emotionally safe and compassionate space to start to explore what might be causing your depression. This therapeutic relationship is incredibly important in the healing process and might just be the first catalyst to positive change.

We know that depression requires a gentle touch. Our first goal will be to just be with you, patiently working to understand your unique circumstances, ways of functioning, historical factors, and biological factors that might be impacting your decreased wellbeing. Compassionate companionship creates a healing connection, and connection is imperative to coming out of the depths of depression. We can offer movement or body-based strategies to help move the emotional energy through the body to find release and freedom. We understand that fostering hope can be messy, and we're more than willing to journey this path with you! We lean on Polyvagal Theory to understand the nervous system state involved in depression. Often times, someone who is managing depression is in a state of nervous system overwhelm, they are experiencing numbness and their system is shutting them down to preserve whatever it can. This is a defense mechanism that we honor and work with (these defenses exist for a reason!). And we know that the only way out of this nervous system freeze response is through high-quality, intentional connection. We are glad to offer this kind of compassionate care and will work to get your nervous system back online so that you can get back into your life and thrive!

Everyone's experience of depression is different, and we will take the time to get to know you and your unique circumstances in order to get to the root of your emotional disruption. For so many, feeling seen and understood can have significant benefits for healing.
  • Some people may have a large burden of difficult emotions they need to navigate on their healing path. We help them build tools to help experience difficult emotions without becoming completely overwhelmed or flooded. We help clients navigate these powerful emotions and offer the presence and reassurance that they will not get lost in them if they allow themselves to fully feel what they need to feel.
  • For others, relationship distress may be feeding their depression. We can help untangle the relationship component and create a plan to help move forward.
  • We are also sympathetic to all of the ways systemic oppression may contribute to experiencing depression. We can provide compassionate, culturally-competent care to help you untangle and process these difficult experiences as well.
There are many causes to depression, and we are interested in uncovering what might be feeding your upset.

We understand the hesitancy to reach out for counseling support. When you are depressed, it is hard to imagine feeling better. That, and it is really hard to find the energy to do anything that feels challenging or uncertain. Some people lean on their desire to improve their relationships or professional performance, knowing those are suffering as the result of their depression. Others are just plain sick and tired of feeling the way they do and are ready to give anything a shot. We honor the work it takes to make that first phone call or send that first email. We will work to lower any barriers you feel to connecting with high quality care. We will connect you with a compassionate and skilled therapist on our team who can then guide you through the process of healing.

If you are ready to feel better, get back online with your relationships, and up to your full potential at work, we welcome your call!
